FAQs

A modem connects your home to your internet service provider, translating the incoming signal into a usable connection. A router then takes that connection and shares it across your devices, wired or wirelessly. Many ISPs supply a combined modem-router, but standalone routers often perform better.
Start with your household size and device count, then match that to dual-band, tri-band, or mesh-compatible options. Consider your typical use, such as gaming, streaming, or remote work, and check for WiFi 6 or WiFi 7 support if you want a future-proof choice.
Mesh WiFi is not necessarily better, but it solves a different problem. A single router suits smaller properties well, while mesh systems use multiple units to cover larger homes or awkward layouts where one router alone cannot reach every room.
There is no single best option, as it depends on your property size and broadband speed. For most UK homes, a dual-band or tri-band WiFi 6 router offers a strong balance of speed, coverage, and value, with mesh systems suited to larger properties.
Most routers last around three to five years before performance noticeably declines or newer WiFi standards make an upgrade worthwhile. Routers used continuously in busier households may benefit from replacement slightly sooner.
